How to get Google Nexus in India

Google launched its own Android handset Nexus in Las Vegas a day before CES 2010.  But for us Indians it will always be a pain here in India (Mostly Tech Freaks!) to get hands on the Smart Phone after waiting pathetic amount of months or even years (if not). BTW the Nexus handset is only availabe in four countries the US, UK, Hong Kong and Singapore. While Surfing Online I  came across a suggestion by gamaze. You will incur some extra shipping costs but if you really can’t wait, here’s what to to:

    



     1. Download and install the free Hotspot Shield software. This will protect your location and IP address so that Google will allow you to access their phone store order pages.

    2. Sign up for a US based shipping address at MyUSABox. Their standard service costs $5 per package and they take the charge for your first package on registration.

    3. Sign up for a Google Checkout account. If you already have a Google or Gmail account, you can add that easily through your Google account settings. Note that you can use any international shipping address and credit card for this purpose, it does not have to be the MyUSABox address you just signed up for.

    4. Order the $530 unlocked version of the phone from the Google Phone Store. Make sure you add the MyUSAbox shipping address and Google Account billing address to the order.

    5. Wait for your Nexus One to arrive to MyUSABox. You should get notified by email as soon as it arrives.

    5. Log in to MyUSABox and forward your box to your home address, it should arrive within a few days.

Google Launches Google Fast Flip

Google had recently launched it's Fast Flip service, which was a Labs' Product until now.  For those who are new, "Google Fast Flip is a web application that lets users discover and share news articles. It combines qualities of print and the Web, with the ability to "flip" through pages online as quickly as flipping through a magazine. It also enables users to follow friends and topics, discover new content and create their own custom magazines around searches."

The Official Google Blog States, 

Today you may notice a change to the Google News home page: Near the bottom, we're now displaying stories from Google Fast Flip, the article-reading service we launched in September. Fast Flip is still in Google Labs, so we'll continue to experiment with the format. But so far we've found that the speed and visual nature of the service encourages readers to look at many articles and, for the ones that catch their interest, click through to the story publishers' websites.

In December we added more than 50 newspapers, magazines, web outlets news wires and TV and radio broadcasters, bringing the total number of news sources discoverable in Fast Flip to more than 90. Airtel launches Twitter by SMS

Twitter has tied up with India's largest mobile services provider, Bharti Airtel, to allow its subscribers to send and receive Twitter messages using SMS (short message service), The partnership means that a huge population can now send Twitter messages at standard rates and receive them for free.

In the Official Press Release from Twitter had posted,

Google admits TPB's Search omision was Mistake

Google had announced on Friday that the omission of The Pirate Bay from the Search Results was an error. Google had stated, "Google received a (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) take-down request that erroneously listed thepiratebay.org, and as a result, this URL was accidentally removed from the Google search index," Google said in a statement. "We are now correcting the removal, and you can expect to see thepiratebay.org back in Google search results this afternoon."

Google didn't provide any details about what caused the error but at this point it doesn't seem to be some kind of orchestrated effort to bring down The Pirate Bay--at least on Google's part. According to Google, it was just a goof.

Google Announces New Translator Widget

Google is now giving webmasters the ability to prompt users for automatic translations of their pages. With the new website translator gadget, site owners can paste a short snippet of code into their websites and instantly increase their reach to up to mind blowing 51 languages.

In the Official Blog Google had Stated as,

Today, we're happy to announce a new website translator gadget powered by Google Translate that enables you to make your site's content available in 51 languages. Now, when people visit your page, if their language (as determined by their browser settings) is different than the language of your page, they'll be prompted to automatically translate the page into their own language. If the visitor's language is the same as the language of your page, no translation banner will appear.

After clicking the Translate button, the automatic translations are shown directly on your page.

It's easy to install — all you have to do is cut and paste a short snippet into your webpage to increase the global reach of your blog or website.

Piracy is Green

Researchers in Carnegie Mellon University, in a study sponsored by Microsoft and Intel have concluded that downloading MP3s from the internet has a considerably reduced carbon footprint over traditional approaches of music distribution.  They considered purchasing CDs from stores, ordering music CDs online, after which they are delivered to homes, downloading files before burning them on CDs and just using the downloaded files and playing them on computers and PMPs without burning them on CDs.  The cost of packaging, transportation, commutation, and energy taken up to listen to the music were all factored in.  While the study does not explicitly state that downloading illegal MP3s is more environmentally friendly than purchasing CDs from a retail outlet, it is a pretty safe assumption to make.

There are some other interesting conclusions of the study though.  If you start feeling guilty about purchasing music from retail outlets because of the harm it causes to mother nature, you can compensate by walking to the retail store instead of driving.  This puts the footprints of downloads and purchases at par.  The original research paper can be downloaded at http://snipurl.com/qtsji

Movie's in Flash Memory Cards

Here's an interesting step taken by the Japan Unit of Walt Disney Co., as it plans to sell its movies on a new medium - flash memory cards. The size of memory cards varies, but Disney has selected the microSD memory card size as the choice to go with for this venture. It initially plans to bundle these memory cards with pre-recorded content along with DVDs of the same movies.

MicroSD was selected because it is the most common type of mobile phone storage; so with this new package, you can watch the movie at home or on your mobile phone when on the move. The microSD are going to be provided by Panasonic, while the price of the pack is set to be approximately Rs. 2,500; This new medium seems certainly more practical than streaming movies on the go.

Walt Disney Studios plans to launch this new service in November, and the first movie titles are going to be the Pirates of the Caribbean series and the National Treasure Series.

Reliance to send novels via SMS

We've all heard of audio books, ebooks and more recently 'classic' old school paper ones. But the latest innovation to hit the written word is SMS Books! That's right, Reliance Communications plans to dole out SMS Novels in India. Perhaps this move is in light of the dearth of data-enabled cell phones in the country, and the small fraction actually connected to data services. The novel Deaf Heaven will be sent to subscribers through a total of 90 SMSs over a period of thirty days. The pricing is affordable; subscribers will be charged Rs. 30 for the full book, which works out to an affordable Re. 1 per day. The only trouble is that while reading an actual book we tend to keep it aside when we want, not when there are no more pages continuing the story. So in this SMS delivery mechanism there shoudl be a way for subscribers to ask for the next set of messages, since most people wouldn't want to wait until the next day to continue the story.

“Windows XP Mode” RC Released for Windows 7

Today the Software giant had released Windows XP Mode RC for Windows 7, Some of the features of this RC includes ,

* You can now attach USB devices to Windows XP Mode applications directly from the Windows 7 task-bar. This means your USB devices, such as printers and flash drives, are available to applications running in Windows XP Mode, without the need to go into full screen mode.
* You can now access Windows XP Mode applications with a “jump-list”. Right click on the Windows XP Mode applications from the Windows 7 task bar to select and open most recently used files.
* You now have the flexibility of customizing where Windows XP Mode differencing disk files are stored.
* You can now disable drive sharing between Windows XP Mode and Windows 7 if you do not need that feature.
* The initial setup now includes a new user tutorial about how to use Windows XP Mode.
